You can’t think of Scotland without thinking of golf. But it may surprise you to learn that the progenitor of this game, perhaps the most popular pastime in the world, was introduced to Scotland from abroad. Like haggis, bagpipes, and tartan, the earliest origins of golf lie outside of the auld country, but glory came through Scottish innovation and passion. It’s a complicated history, so here’s a brief overview.
