PGA of America Names Derek Sprague as Chief Executive Officer
The PGA of America is thrilled to announce the appointment of Derek Sprague as its new chief executive officer, effective July 1, 2023. Currently serving as the president and CEO of Troon, Sprague will take over from Seth Waugh, who is stepping down after an impressive 12-year tenure.
With three decades of experience in the golf industry, Sprague brings a remarkable depth of knowledge in golf management, operations, and business development. Under his visionary leadership, Troon has flourished into the world’s largest golf management company, overseeing more than 630 golf courses across 45 states and 35 countries.
“Derek is a proven leader with a profound understanding of the golf industry and an unwavering commitment to innovation,” stated PGA of America President Jim Richerson. “We are excited about his vision for the future and confident that he will elevate the PGA of America to unprecedented heights.

Colonial Country Club’s recent renovation returned the historic course to its roots by embracing Gil Hanse’s philosophy of “history as our guide.” The redesign restored the course’s original character, influenced by Donald Ross’s legacy. Hanse enhanced the course’s strategic challenges while preserving its historical charm. Bunkers were reshaped and re-positioned, greens were expanded and re-contoured, and fairways were strategically narrowed or widened to evoke Ross’s original vision and create a more enjoyable and challenging playing experience.
