## Golf Basics for Beginners

### 1. The Goal of Golf
The objective is to get the golf ball into each hole in as few strokes as possible. A full course usually has 18 holes, though beginners may start with 9 holes.

Each hole has a **par** score:
– **Par 3:** Usually reached in one shot, then two putts.
– **Par 4:** Usually reached in two shots, then two putts.
– **Par 5:** Usually reached in three shots, then two putts.

### 2. Basic Golf Clubs
A typical golf bag contains several types of clubs:

– **Driver:** Used for long tee shots, usually on par 4s and par 5s.
– **Fairway woods / hybrids:** Used for longer shots from the fairway or rough.
– **Irons:** Used for approach shots. Lower-numbered irons hit farther; higher-numbered irons hit higher and shorter.
– **Wedges:** Used for short shots, chips, sand shots, and pitches.
– **Putter:** Used on the green to roll the ball into the hole.

For a beginner, a driver, a hybrid, a few irons, a wedge, and a putter are enough to start.

### 3. Grip
Hold the club firmly but without excessive tension. A common grip for right-handed players is:

– Left hand near the top of the club.
– Right hand below the left hand.
– Hands work together as one unit.

Your grip should feel secure, but not like you are squeezing the club too hard.

### 4. Stance and Posture
For a basic full swing:

– Stand with feet about shoulder-width apart.
– Bend slightly from the hips, keeping your back fairly straight.
– Flex your knees slightly.
– Let your arms hang naturally.
– Keep your weight balanced between both feet.

Position the ball differently depending on the club:
– **Driver:** Near the inside of your front foot.
– **Irons:** Near the middle of your stance.
– **Wedges:** Slightly back of center.

### 5. The Basic Swing
A golf swing has several simple stages:

1. **Setup:** Grip, aim, and stand balanced.
2. **Backswing:** Turn your shoulders and move the club back smoothly.
3. **Downswing:** Shift weight toward your front foot and bring the club down.
4. **Impact:** Strike the ball before the ground when using irons.
5. **Follow-through:** Continue the swing toward the target and finish balanced.

Focus first on making smooth, controlled swings rather than trying to hit the ball as far as possible.

### 6. Putting
Putting is one of the most important parts of golf.

– Use a relaxed grip.
– Keep your head still.
– Make a pendulum-like movement using your shoulders.
– Focus on controlling distance first, then direction.

A useful beginner goal is to avoid three-putting whenever possible.

### 7. Basic Golf Etiquette
Golf is built around safety, pace, and respect for the course.

– Do not stand close to someone swinging a club.
– Never hit a ball if players are within range ahead of you.
– Remain quiet while others are hitting.
– Repair ball marks on greens.
– Replace divots or fill them with sand/seed mix.
– Rake bunkers after playing from them.
– Keep up with the group in front of you.

### 8. Simple Beginner Tips
– Start from shorter tees.
– Practice putting and chipping often.
– Learn one reliable club for tee shots, even if it is not the driver.
– Keep the ball in play instead of always chasing distance.
– Accept bad shots and move on to the next one.

Golf improves through repetition, patience, and good fundamentals.
