The Williams-Franklin Foundation’s fourth annual golf tournament fundraiser returned to Prince George’s County this Friday, continuing its mission to support Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Since its start, the event has donated scholarship money to HBCUs to help grow their golf programs. The tournament raises funds and draws attention to the need for more diversity in the golfing community.
Participants and sponsors recognized the importance of the event, which has become a key platform for highlighting the challenges and opportunities HBCUs face in nurturing future golf talent. During a panel discussion,Sarah Williams, the foundation’s founder, said,”We see this tournament as an investment in the next generation of golfers. Our partnerships with HBCUs are vital in fostering an environment where students can thrive and pursue their dreams.”
The tournament also awards scholarships to students who show a strong commitment to golf through both academic and athletic achievements. This year, the foundation announced several new scholarship recipients, including three young players who have demonstrated extraordinary skill and dedication to the sport. The scholarships aim to encourage participation and retention in golf, a sport that can be expensive and restrictive, by providing financial assistance to promising HBCU students.
| Year | HBCU Partnership | Scholarship Amount |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | X University | $15,000 |
| 2024 | Y College | $20,000 |
| 2025 | Z Institute | $25,000 |
The event featured a silent auction and raffle, with proceeds going directly to support the scholarship program and other initiatives aimed at improving access to golf for underrepresented demographics. These fundraising efforts are crucial in maintaining the foundation’s commitment to nurturing talent and promoting inclusion in a traditionally exclusive sport.
