Nicklaus: Reuniting golf ‘above my pay grade’

Jack ‍Nicklaus⁣ has never hesitated⁤ to ⁢weigh⁣ in on contemporary golf and its many characters, but most of⁣ the time, he’s more interested in reminiscing about the sport’s most golden⁢ era, which ⁤he ⁤fondly refers⁤ to as “the Golden ⁤Age of Golf,” ⁤or more specifically, his heyday. That era predates cell phones, GPS⁤ and high-definition ⁤television, where pros used persimmon drivers, balata‌ golf balls and wore bell-bottoms.

However, at ‍the 2023 Memorial ⁣Tournament⁤ presented‍ by Workday,‌ which honors the legend’s legacy, he couldn’t resist⁢ acknowledging the Tour’s top players, even if he did so while showcasing his humility and quick⁣ wit.

“I was‍ watching [Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler] playing the other⁢ day. It’s above my ⁣pay grade. They’re ‍so good,” he said Tuesday, ⁣evoking laughter from the assembled media ⁤at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

His comments, although delivered in a humorous manner, spoke truth: Today’s tour⁤ pros are not only ⁤longer, but ‍also more accurate and skilled around⁤ the⁣ greens‍ when compared to the ⁣players of his era.

Consider these statistics from Data Golf, which has tracked PGA Tour data since ‌2003:

  • Driving Distance: The average PGA Tour driving⁢ distance has risen from 284.2 yards ‍in ‌2003 to 298.77⁢ yards in 2022, a gain⁣ of 14.57 yards.
  • Greens in Regulation: The percentage of greens hit⁤ in‍ regulation⁢ has increased from ⁢a ⁢Tour average of 64.67% ‌in 2003 to 67.56% in 2022.
  • Putts per Round: Putts ⁤per round have decreased from 29.46⁢ in 2003 to 28.65 in 2022.

This isn’t to ‌say that Nicklaus wouldn’t be⁤ able ‌to compete⁢ on Tour in⁣ today’s era. His competitive spirit, meticulous ‍preparation ‍and unmatched work ethic would undoubtedly‌ serve him well.

But it is to acknowledge the fact that ‌the game ⁤of golf has evolved over the‌ years,⁣ and that today’s players are⁢ operating at a different level than those who‌ came before them.

“The equipment has ⁣allowed ⁣them to become very, very ⁣powerful and become much more accurate,” ⁢said Nicklaus. “It’s not uncommon to see these guys⁣ hit 340-yard drives that are⁢ right in the middle⁤ of ⁣the ⁤fairway. ⁢That wasn’t happening 25 years ago,‍ for sure.”

It’s not as though the advancements in technology ⁤and training are solely responsible for‍ the soaring heights reached ⁢by today’s tour⁤ pros. They ⁣also dedicate themselves ‌to studying the game‌ and implementing new strategies and techniques.

Nicklaus, who has always been a student of the ‌game, appreciates the way that today’s players are using technology and information to their ⁢advantage.

“I think it’s great,” said ⁢Nicklaus, who has ⁢always relied more on his ⁢instincts than on mechanical⁢ technique. “You have to take advantage of every bit of technology that you can to become as ⁣good ‍as ‍you possibly can.”
