Kuchar, who won the event in 2019, birdied three of his first four holes and added four more birdies on the back nine to finish at 12-under 128. He is one shot ahead of Sepp Straka, who shot a 65.

“I’m very pleased,” Kuchar said. “I drove the ball well, hit my irons well, and made some putts. It was a good day.”

Straka, who is seeking his first PGA Tour victory, had a bogey-free round with six birdies. He is tied with Russell Henley, who also shot a 65.

“I’m really happy with the way I’m playing,” Straka said. “I’m hitting the ball well and making some putts. I’m just trying to stay patient and take it one shot at a time.”
