Golf Basics
Here are the core beginner golf basics:

1. **Grip**
– Hold the club mostly in your fingers, not deep in your palms.
– Your hands should work together as one unit.
– For a right-handed golfer, the left hand is above the right hand.

2. **Setup / Stance**
– Stand with feet about shoulder-width apart.
– Bend slightly from the hips, with knees softly flexed.
– Keep your back relatively straight and let your arms hang naturally.

3. **Ball Position**
– Short irons: roughly in the middle of your stance.
– Mid-irons: slightly forward of center.
– Driver: inside your front foot.

4. **Posture and Alignment**
– Aim the clubface at the target first.
– Then align your feet, hips, and shoulders parallel to the target line.
– Think of your body line as railroad tracks alongside the ball-to-target line.

5. **Basic Swing**
– Start slowly and focus on balance.
– Turn your shoulders on the backswing rather than only lifting your arms.
– Shift weight toward your front foot through impact.
– Finish facing the target with your weight mostly on the front foot.

6. **Make Contact Before Power**
– A smooth, controlled swing is more useful than trying to hit hard.
– Focus on hitting the ball first, then the turf with irons.
– Use shorter swings until contact becomes consistent.

7. **Golf Etiquette**
– Stay quiet and still while others hit.
– Repair divots and ball marks on the green.
– Keep pace with the group ahead.
– Prioritize safety-never swing if someone could be hit.

A good first practice goal is simply to make balanced, solid contact with short irons and wedges before worrying about distance.
