– Local Favorites Seek Early Advantage
There are several familiar names at the top of the first-round leaderboard of the 2024 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. The trio of players are tied in the first position with scores of -5 through 18 holes and they all have connections to Mexico. First of all, there’s Abraham Ancer, who is representing the host country. Carlos Ortiz and Sebastián Muñoz are both Mexican-American and they are enjoying a share of the lead after round one.
Local boy Ancer had a bogey-free round of five birdies to earn his place at the top of the World Wide Technology Championship leaderboard. The former World No. 16 feels that his game is in pretty good shape and he is enjoying playing in Mayakoba for the first time since 2018. “It’s always nice to start off with a good round, especially at a place like this where a good start is important.“
Ortiz made three birdies in the last four holes of his round to get his name on the leaderboard. The 31-year-old Guadalajara native said that he is hungry for a hometown victory. “It would be a dream come true. I’ve come close here before, but I’ve never been able to win. I know it’s a long way away, but it’s definitely a goal of mine.”
Muñoz is still searching for his first PGA TOUR victory, but he just missed out on a win at the Sanderson Farms Championship last month and he currently feels that he is playing the best golf of his life. The 30-year-old Bogota native knows that it will be tough to stay ahead of the pack, but he will try to remain patient on the El Camaleon Golf Course. “I’m just trying to be patient. I know that the course is playing tough, but I also know that there are a lot of birdie opportunities out there.”
Thursday’s Round 1 tee times at the 2024 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba highlight the tournament’s international field. Players from 20 different countries will tee off, including nine major champions.
