Golfing in ’24: From Scottie’s Masters triumph to new LPGA faces
As we bid farewell to 2023, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable moments that made this year a true celebration for golf enthusiasts. From Scottie Scheffler’s unforgettable Masters victory to the rise of thrilling new talents on the LPGA tour, this year was packed with extraordinary highlights on the greens.
One moment that truly captivated me was Scheffler’s commanding performance at Augusta National. The young American seemed invincible as he surged ahead to secure a four-shot victory, becoming the first player since Tiger Woods in 2002 to win the Masters by such an impressive margin. It was a breathtaking exhibition of skill and determination that firmly established Scheffler as one of golf’s shining stars
The PGA Tour board has greenlit groundbreaking changes to its eligibility criteria, setting the stage for a transformative era in the sport. Starting in 2026, players will need to secure a spot in the top 25 of the FedEx Cup standings or rake in $2 million during a season to keep their Tour cards. In addition, the field size for regular Tour events will be trimmed from 156 to 120 participants, and the total number of events will decrease from 49 to 44. These strategic adjustments are designed to boost competitiveness within the Tour and open up exciting new opportunities for emerging talent
Matt Kuchar shot a second consecutive 64 on Friday to take a one-stroke lead into the weekend at the Wyndham Championship.
Kuchar, who won the event in 2019, birdied three of his first four holes and added four more birdies on the back nine to finish at 12-under 128. He is one shot ahead of Sepp Straka, who shot a 65.
“I’m very pleased,” Kuchar said. “I drove the ball well, hit my irons well, and made some putts. It was a good day.”
Straka, who is seeking his first PGA Tour victory, had a bogey-free round with six birdies. He is tied with Russell Henley, who also shot a 65.
“I’m really happy with the way I’m playing,” Straka said. “I’m hitting the ball well and making some putts. I’m just trying to stay patient and take it one shot at a time.”
