Hideki Matsuyama survives late collapse, rules controversy, wins first FedEx Cup playoff event

Hideki Matsuyama overcame a late collapse and a rules controversy to win the first FedEx Cup playoff event, the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Matsuyama held a three-shot lead with four holes to play but bogeyed three of his last four holes, including the par-4 18th. However, Sepp Straka, who was tied with Matsuyama at the time, also bogeyed the 18th, allowing Matsuyama to win by one stroke.

The win was Matsuyama’s first in the FedEx Cup playoffs and his second of the season. It also moved him to No. 1 in the FedEx Cup standings with two events remaining.
