The beauty of the high, soft bunker shot is that it’s a lot easier to pull off than most golfers think. Here are two simple keys to hitting one:

  1. Stay down and through. Most amateurs tend to pop up on these shots, which causes the ball to balloon and land hard. To avoid this, make a conscious effort to stay down and through the shot, as if you were hitting a pitch shot off a tight lie.
  1. Open the clubface. Another common mistake is not opening the clubface enough. With a high, soft bunker shot, you want the clubface to be pointing slightly to the sky at impact. This will help the ball to get up and down quickly, with plenty of spin.
