McIlroy had been in contention throughout the tournament but could not find the birdie he needed on the final hole to force a playoff. This is the third time in his career that McIlroy has lost a tournament by one stroke. He also lost to Sergio Garcia in the 2019 Masters and to Francesco Molinari in the 2018 Open Championship.
