Hayden Springer made a strong start at the John Deere Classic, shooting a 6-under 65 to sit just two shots off the lead after the first round. The 31-year-old American, who is still searching for his first PGA Tour victory, carded seven birdies and one bogey at TPC Deere Run on Thursday to put himself in contention. “It was a special round,” Springer said. “I hit the ball really well, made some putts and took advantage of the par 5s. I’m really happy with where I’m at.” Springer is two shots behind leader Greyson Coody, who shot an 8-under 63.

Tyrrell Hatton fired a flawless 8-under 64 to seize a three-stroke lead after the first round of the LIV Golf Invitational – Nashville on Friday. The Englishman, who won the opening event of the breakaway series in London in June, made eight birdies at the par-71, no-cut event at the㠊TPC Southwind.

Hatton, 30, leads Chile’s Joaquin Niemann and American Talor Gooch, who both shot 67s.

Niemann, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 19 in the world, played alongside Hatton and birdied three of his last four holes to stay in contention.

Gooch, one of 10 Americans in the 48-man field, is making his debut in the Saudi-backed series. He is one of several players who resigned this year from the PGA Tour.
