Russell, 15, debuts with 74 at Rocket Mortgage

Fifteen-year-old Australian amateur Aaron Russell fired a 3-over 74 in his PGA Tour debut on Thursday at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, making him the youngest player to make the cut at a PGA Tour event since Guan Tianlang in 2013.

Russell, who is ranked No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, birdied the 10th hole to move to 1 under, but he made three bogeys on the back nine to finish the day tied for 74th place.

“I thought I played pretty well,” Russell said. “I hit some good shots, but I also made some mistakes. I’m still learning, but I’m happy with how I played.”

Russell, 15, youngest to make Korn Ferry cut

Kyle Russell, a 15-year-old golfer from Vancouver Island, made history on Thursday by becoming the youngest player ever to make the cut at a Korn Ferry Tour event.

Russell carded opening rounds of 69 and 71 to finish in a tie for 44th, seven shots back of the leader.

“It’s incredible, this is a dream come true,” said Russell after his round. “I’ve been working so hard for this and it’s paid off.”

Russell is the son of PGA Tour player Brad Russell and has been playing golf since he was three years old. He won the British Junior Open in July and is considered one of the top junior golfers in the world.

“I’ve always believed in myself,” said Russell. “I was a little nervous with about two holes to go but I knew I had to finish strong.”
