Ken Green and LIV Golf player Shaun Micheel took the lead at the Senior PGA Championship on Thursday, shooting 5-under 65s at Harbor Shores Resort in Michigan. Green, 57, is a two-time major champion on the PGA Tour, while Micheel, 52, is the 2003 PGA Championship winner.
The PGA Tour’s executive vice president and chief of operations Andy Pazder has announced that Chief Tour Operations Officer Tyler Dunne will resign from his position on 30th June. Dunne’s departure comes amidst stalled talks between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed golf series that has lured several high-profile players away from the PGA Tour.
Dunne had been with the PGA Tour for 12 years, overseeing tournament operations, player services, and international development. His resignation has fueled speculation that the PGA Tour may be preparing for a more aggressive strategy in countering LIV Golf. Pazder stated that the search for Dunne’s replacement would begin immediately.
Seven LIV golfers, including Talor Gooch and Hudson Swafford, have received special invites to the 2023 PGA Championship. The PGA of America extended the exemptions based on the players’ rankings and performance, despite their affiliation with the controversial LIV Golf series. The decision has sparked controversy, as the PGA Tour has suspended LIV members. However, the PGA of America maintains that its choice is based on merit rather than affiliation. The invited LIV golfers will avoid qualifying through the Open Championship for a spot in the U.S. Open.
