South Korean amateur shock Open leader
South Korean amateur Joohyung ‘Tom’ Kim stunned spectators at the Scottish Open by grabbing a shock lead after the first round. The 20-year-old carded a flawless 64 to finish one stroke ahead of world number one Rory McIlroy and three clear of defending champion Xander Schauffele. Kim, who is ranked 38th in the amateur world rankings, made six birdies and an eagle to set the clubhouse target on the Renaissance Club’s par-70 course. The South Korean has been in impressive form this season, winning two events on the Asian Tour and finishing runner-up in the Amateur Championship. He will now be seeking to become the first amateur to win a DP World Tour event since 1993 when he returns for the second round on Friday.
