Horschel edges McIlroy in playoff to win BMW

American Billy Horschel edged out Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy in a playoff to win the BMW Championship on Sunday, securing his first victory of the PGA Tour season.

Horschel, who finished the regulation 72 holes tied with McIlroy at 13-under 271, birdied the first extra hole to claim the title at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware.

McIlroy, the world number one, had a chance to force a second playoff hole but missed a birdie putt from about 15 feet.

Horschel’s victory moved him to the top of the FedEx Cup standings, with two events remaining in the playoffs.
